Stable isotopes of carbon, nitrogen, sulphur, and chemical contaminants in common dolphins Delphinus delphis from European Atlantic waters sampled between 2017 and 2023

Listed in data.InDoRES

This dataset presents individual stable isotope ratios of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur (δ13C, δ15N and δ34S values), and chemical contaminant levels (both inorganic and organic contaminants) measured in common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) from European Atlantic waters.

Description

Whenever possible, tissue samples of skin, muscle, kidney, liver and blubber were collected on a total of 227 individuals between 2017 and 2023. These individuals encompass 117 stranded animals recovered by local stranding networks and 3 bycaught individuals directly observed on board (dead animals), likely living and feeding on the continental shelves of four European countries (France: English Channel and Bay of Biscay, Spain and Portugal: Atlantic coast, and Ireland).

In addition, 107 remote biopsies (skin and bubbler samples only) were collected on living individuals from offshore waters (i.e. beyond the continental slope) in the Bay of Biscay and around the Madeira archipelago. Stable isotope ratios of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur were measured in the skin and/or in the muscle tissue. Concentrations in 16 essentials and non-essentials elements including mercury (Hg) were measured in skin (Hg only), liver and/or kidney.

For organic contaminants, concentrations in different congeners/molecules belonging to four families including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs, 8 congeners), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, 48 congeners), 17 dioxins, and 26 organochlorine pesticides (OPs) were measured in the blubber tissue. This dataset is used in the article entitled “Multi-tracer evidence of ecological segregation in common dolphins from the European Atlantic, with conservation and management implications” published in Journal for Nature Conservation.

Note that isotopic data (carbon and nitrogen) and some metal concentrations (Hg, Se and Pb in liver, Cd in kidney) for stranded individuals from the Bay of Biscay collected between 2017 and 2019 have already been published in Méndez-Fernandez et al. (2022) (doi.org/10.1016/j.chemosphere.2022.133676), and isotopic data (carbon and nitrogen) for Madeira samples in Ferreira et al. (2025) (doi.org/10.1111/jzo.70053).
