Energy Consumption Surveys
Listed in Harvard Dataverse
The agency created and used these files to analyze and report on energy consumption and expenditures by end-use sector in the United States.
Description
The agency conducted the Federal Buildings Supplemental Survey (FBSS) in conjunction with the Department of Energy's Office of Federal Energy Management Programs to gain a better understanding of how Federal buildings use energy. This series consists of data from various surveys of energy consumption at residences, Federal buildings, commercial buil dings, and by residential transportation.
These surveys include the Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS), Federal Buildings Supplemental Survey (FBSS), Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS), and Residential Transportation Energy Consumption Survey (RTECS).The CBECS is a national sample survey that contains energy-related building characteristics data and energy consumption and expenditures data for commercial buildings in the United States.

The CBECS microdata files contain more than 5,000 records, representing commercial buildings from the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each record corresponds to a single responding, in-scope sampled building and contains information for that building about the building size, year constructed, types of energy used, energy-using equipment, conservation features, energy consumption and expenditures, and the amount of energy used for nine end uses: space heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, water heating, cooking, refrigeration, office equipment, and other end uses. The FBSS contains data from a sample of 881 Federal commercial buildings located in three Federal regions: Federal Region 3 (Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia); Federal Region 6 (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas); and Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Nevada).
Each record corresponds to a single responding, in-scope sample building and contains information for that building about the building size, year constructed, types of energy used, energy-using equipment, conservation features, energy consumption and expenditures, and temperature data. The RECS contains data from a national sample survey of housing units. The survey has statistical information on the consumption of and expenditures for energy in housing units along with data on energy-related characteristics of the housing units and occupants.
The survey is restricted to housing units that are the primary residence of the occupants; the RECS does not cover vacant housing units, second homes, or vacation units. Each microdata record corresponds to a single responding, in-scope sampled housing unit and contains information for that unit about the size, year constructed, types of energy used, energy-using equipment, conservation features, energy consumption and expenditures (electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, kerosene, and Liquid Petroleum Gas), and the amount of energy used for five end uses: space heating, air-conditioning, water heating, refrigeration, and other. The RTECS contains information on the types of energy used by consumer groups along with the consumer characteristics that are associated with energy use.
It includes data on energy use and expenditures, vehicle miles-traveled (VMT), and vehicle characteristics for household vehicles. For the 1994 survey, the files contain data from a national sample of more than 3,000 households that own or use some 5,500 vehicles provided data. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
