Dataset of First-Instance Criminal Judgments on Drug-Related Crimes in Yunnan Province (1987–2026)

This dataset is constructed based on public effective judicial documents from Judicial Opinions of China, focusing on criminal cases of drug-related crimes across the entire territory of Yunnan Province.
Description
Data collection and standardized cleaning are completed through unified retrieval rules and screening criteria to ensure the consistency of sample types and the reliability of case information.Three rigid screening conditions are set for data collection: case type limited to "criminal case", document type limited to "judgment", and trial procedure limited to "first-instance criminal trial".
On this basis, independent retrieval and extraction are carried out by category for six statutory drugs (methamphetamine, heroin, opium, cannabis, ketamine, cocaine), according to whether the corresponding drug type is mentioned in the full text of the judgment.The dataset construction includes four quality control procedures: duplicate case identification and removal, abnormal text verification, case information integrity check, and manual sampling review.

Finally, a total of 42,794 valid first-instance criminal judgments are included after deduplication. The time span covers 1987 to 2026, with the number of cases peaking during 2015–2020. Independent statistics by drug type: 19,252 methamphetamine-related cases, 18,440 heroin-related cases, 3,986 opium-related cases, 634 cannabis-related cases, 278 ketamine-related cases, and 204 cocaine-related cases (a single case may involve multiple drugs, resulting in overlapping counts in category statistics).
The main charges involved include smuggling, trafficking, transporting and manufacturing drugs, and illegal possession of drugs.This dataset can support legal, criminological and geospatial research on the spatial-temporal distribution of drug crimes, regional sentencing patterns, and evaluation of drug control effectiveness. All raw data come from official judicial public channels and comply with specifications for scientific data disclosure and academic use.
