Macrofungi species occurrences in Lake Ol Bolossat Ecosystem in Nyandarua County, Kenya

Listed in GBIF

Macrofungi communities play a key role in sustaining plant ecosystems by regulating nutrient cycling through the decomposition of dead plant and animal matter, supplying nutrients to plants, and providing food for insects, small mammals, and soil microbes (Ambrosio et al., 2015).

Description

They also contribute significantly to local livelihoods by providing food and income and by supporting industries that produce dyes, pharmaceuticals, organic acids, hormones, animal feeds, beverages, and other products (Boa, 2014).

Because macrofungi in their natural habitats are highly sensitive to changes in climate (temperature, humidity), soil quality, and plant composition, they can serve as early indicators of land degradation (Lagana et al., 2002; Tibuhwa et al., 2011). Understanding macrofungal diversity therefore holds great potential for predicting the fate of natural ecosystems under varying levels of stress. This study presents macrofungal species occurrences in the riparian zones around Lake Ol Bolossat to reveal their diversity.
