BEWOHNT - The Importance of Living in the Neighbourhood for Healthy Ageing, Wave 2

Listed in GESIS Data Archive and CESSDA Data Catalogue — shown once because both records carry DOI 10.4232/1.14584

The Frankfurt research project BEWOHNT “Hier will ich wohnen bleiben” (I want to stay here), commissioned by the BHF-BANK Foundation, examined the importance of living in the neighborhood for healthy aging.

Description

The aim was to empirically record the living situations, needs, and everyday lives of people aged 70 to 89 in three differently structured districts of Frankfurt—Bockenheim, Schwanheim, and Nordweststadt—in order to establish basic knowledge for municipal policy on aging and enable district-specific measures.

The study was intended to provide new insights for the practice of geriatric care and for the strategic development of demographically stable neighborhoods. The publication of the data was financed by the Charlotte Fresenius University of Applied Sciences in Cologne. The follow-up survey was conducted between February and September 2012, approximately nine months after the initial survey, with 463 people (77.8%) participating again.

The sample was selected at random based on resident registration data and recruited through personal contact and consultation with local stakeholders. The survey was conducted in the form of personal interviews (home visits). The geographical coverage explicitly extended to the three selected Frankfurt districts, which represent different urban structures.

The survey was conducted and scientifically supervised by the Endowed Chair for Interdisciplinary Gerontology at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. The repeat survey focused on changes experienced, the evaluation of services in the district, aspects of objective health and health literacy, and the evaluation of current life and future prospects. Special scales and measuring instruments were used, including scales for emotional well-being (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS)), for assessing current life (Valuation of Life (VOL)), and for health literacy (European Health Literacy Survey).
