How Scenario Type, Mental Requirements, and Technology Exposure Jointly Shape Human-Robot Collaboration Preferences
Listed in ScienceDB
Human preferences for collaborating with robots exhibit marked "scenario dependence"; individuals are more open to robotic partners in function-execution contexts (e.g., factory, security) but more reserved in interaction-service contexts (e.g., education, healthcare).
Description
However, existing research has predominantly investigated decontextualized factors without systematically treating scenario type as a core independent variable.
The present study examines how scenario type, mental capacity requirements (agency and experience), and individual technology exposure jointly shape human-robot collaboration preferences across four experiments. A pilot study (N=30) classified six common scenarios into function-execution and interaction-service types via hierarchical cluster analysis. Experiment 1 (N=286) adopted a 2 (scenario type) × 2 (agency) × 2 (experience) within-subjects design, confirming significant main effects and two-way interactions.

Experiment 2 (N=40) replicated these findings in a controlled laboratory setting and revealed a significant three-way interaction among scenario type, agency, and experience. Experiment 3 (N=78) introduced technology exposure as a between-subjects factor in a mixed design, finding that low-exposure individuals showed a cross-scenario "floor effect" under high experience requirements, whereas high-exposure individuals maintained context-sensitive processing.
These findings demonstrate that human-robot collaboration preferences are shaped by the complex interplay of scenario-activated scripts, task-specific mental requirements, and the decision-maker's technology cognitive schema.
