Dynamic Control of Turbulent Transition in Cross-Flow Dominated Boundary Layers via Gaussian Processes

Listed in ZivaHub

Stationary cross-flow often dominates the turbulent transition process over swept geometries; therefore, controlling cross-flow instabilities can lead to reduced surface heating in hypersonic flows.

Description

Subcritical forcing inhibits the growth of the most naturally amplified cross-flow mode by raising the initial amplitude of a subcritical mode so that it inhibits critical mode growth and delays turbulence onset. Controlling cross-flow turbulent transition remains challenging since variations in both the boundary-layer state and freestream disturbances can modify both the forced disturbance amplitudes and wavelengths needed for control.

This dissertation addresses that challenge by developing active control strategies for delaying turbulence in the boundary layer of a 70-degree swept fin on a 7-degree half-angle cone. Experiments were performed in the US AFA Mach 6 Ludwieg Tube and then in the new Notre Dame STEM Mach 6 Ludwieg Tube. To support the later experiments, the Mach number, freestream pressure fluctuations, and condensation onset curve were characterized for the tunnel.

Surface temperatures on the swept fin were measured with infrared thermography. Heat flux was computed with an implicit two-slab finite volume method, which is shown to be less error-prone than standard approaches. Spectral analyses on the heating data identified critical cross-flow wavelengths.

Based on these results, two actuators were designed. The first actuator, Dynamic Discrete Roughness Elements, modulates the amplitude of surface roughness on the fin. The second actuator, Dynamic Wavelength Plasma Roughness, changes the voltage of a DBD plasma actuator and forces integer multiples of a design wavelength.

Both designs delayed turbulent onset and reduced surface heating. The experiments revealed a strong dependence of the critical wavelength on the fin yaw angle. Closed-loop control was demonstrated, in which a Gaussian Process model-based control system minimized the integrated surface heating utilizing the DWPR actuator and a real-time solution of the heat equation.
