Description
The title of this research project is \"Political System and Electoral Behavior: An Analysis of 1983 Supplementary Election of the Legislative Yuan\" (National Science Council series number NSC 73-0301-H-002-04).The principal investigator on the project was Professor Hu Fu from the Political Science Department National Taiwan University. The associate investigators were Professor Chen Te-yu, also of the NTU Political Science Department, and Dr.
Shyu Huo-yan of the Sun Yat-sen Institute of Social Sciences and Philosophy at Academia Sinica. The questionnaire for this study was divided into two main parts. The first part of the questionnaire covered voting behavior, and included questions concerning (1) the reasons for non-voting, (2) the process of deciding how to vote, (3) voting orientation, and (4) election result-party choice.

The second part covered topics related to electoral participation on several different levels (including a basic look at variables such as input, transformation, and output). We divided electoral activities into five levels: sustaining, persuading, reforming, accelerating, and intervening. \' Sustaining\' was considered the lowest level, and \'intervening\' the highest level. As the level of participation increased, participation in lower- level activities also increased.
The survey research for this project was conducted island-wide. Due to budget and time limitations, we used a smaller sample size and to conduct our investigation. In order to ensure the accurate representation of the sample, our workshop adopted a fairly complex multiple-stage sampling method.
We followed the principles of probabilities proportional to size (PPS), stratified sampling, systematic sampling, and double sampling methods to ensure that our data was accurate and robust.
