Description
I checked this entire file ONE TIME ONLY. For much of file, I have checked data TWO TIMES.
And I have done several other quick checks for outliers For some GPDs, we captured them once, but they lived out of the study area. I have labelled them in Column-I as "Out of study area," and I have excluded them for analyses of Fig 14.13-- because I did not know if they were still alive, somewhere, but uncaptured. For GPDs first marked in 2012 and still alive in 2016, I assume they were one-year olds in the mating season 2012--because so few GPDs lived to be >=4 years old Examples include 51 (eartag = 4), WA7 (457), 6str (333), and RR4 (171) Male-44 was >=2 in 2012 (i.e., not a yearling), and he lived until Sept 2016--so I assumed that Male-44 would have been 2 years old in spring 2013.

For Fig 14.13, I examined survivorship of OLDER UPD MALES, for which "Age next spring" was >=2-- i.e., I excluded UPD males that were Age = 1 for next spring, and these latter males were only 4-5 months old in Autumn when I captured them Survivorship until next mating season = 0 = GPD did NOT survive Survivorship until next mating season = 1 = GPD DID survive Age next spring = = age in next mating season = number of years since first emergence from natal burrow-entrance As noted above, I EXCLUDED all dogs that were out of study-area for the results in Fig 14.13.
See text for more details. If "age next spring" was 1, then age in previous autumn would have been 4-5 months old. If "age next spring" was 2, then age in previous autumn would have been 16-17 months old.
And so forth. Fig 14.14 includes only older GPD males who wert >=1.5 years only in autumn and >=2 years old during the next mating season. So, GPD data in Fig 14.3 do NOT body masses of GPD males who were 4.5 months old in Autumn and 1 year old in the next spring.
The number above each SE line (SEM) indicates the number of Older GPD body masses Date shown in this EXCEL files are means + one standard error (SEM) All body masses are in GRAMS. Notes for Fig 14.13: The body masses of the 55 surviving older GPD males (>= 1.5 years old when weighed in autumn) were significantly higher in autumn than the body mass of the 48 nonsurviving older GPD males (<= 0.5 years old in when weighed in autumn).
As shown in Chapter 14 and Table 14.1 adult (>=1 year old in next mating season) GPD female survivors did not weigh more than GPD female nonsurvivors. Further, for both sexes, <5-month old GPD survivors did NOT weigh more than <5 month nonsurvivors GPD Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC, studied in 2013 through 2016) was at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP). GPD Visitor Center Colony (VCC, studied in 2017 and 2018) was also at VCNP.
GPD colony at Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) was studied from 1989 through 1995. All data in this table are from RMC and VCC, when I captured GPDs in autumn every year. No data from PEFO, where I did NOT capture GPDs in autumn.
These data used for Fig 14.13 in Hoogland 2026. This file ready for longterm storage on 06 May 2025. I considered data from the same prairie dog in different years to be independent.
Note #1 for this EXCEL file: The information in Fig 14.13 for GPDs is confusing. I hope these notes will help to clarify. Note #2 for this EXCEL file: I cannot find raw data for BTPD autumn body masses, but see page 305 of Hoogland 1995 for BTPD data shown in Figure 14.13.
For BTPD females >=1.5 years in October, the mean + SD body mass of BTPD females that DID survive until the next mating season was 829 + 106 grams (N = 285), and the mean + SD body mass of BTPD females that did NOT survive was 807 + 96.4 grams (N = 168). This difference was significant (P = 0.022, Mann Whitney U test). Note that all body BTPD female body masses this comparison were from September or October, and all the BTPD female body masses were from BTPD females that were >=1.5 years old in September or October, and would have been >=2 years old for the next mating season.
In other words: all the BTPD body masses here are from are from OLDER black-tail females, with NO DATA from BTPD females that were only 0.5 years old in September or October (and would have been one-year old (yearlings) in the following mating season. The numbers for this comparison for BTPD female body masses in September or October vs survivorship until the next mating season were checked two times when I did the analysis for Hoogland 1995.
For Fig 14.13, notice that comparison autumn body mass vs survivorship involved OLDER GPD males, with no data from GPD males that were only 0.5 years old. Note #2 for this EXCEL file: NO data for UPD autumn body masses vs survivorship, because I never captured and weighed UPDs in autumn. File name = Fig 14.13, GPDs, Older males (>=1.5 years in autumn), Autumn body mass vs survivorship, 08 May 2026
