National Occupational Health Survey of Mining (NOHSM) Files

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency created and maintained NOHSM to survey all substances found on mine properties to determine threats to the environmental health of the site and in accordance with the U.S. Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977.

Description

They used the data to determine whether potentially toxic concentrations of hazardous substances were used or found in working mines. This series contains data on occupational health factors related to mine safety.

The NOHSM consists of three parts. The first part contains responses to a questionnaire administered to mine management about their industrial hygiene practices, medical services, general facility information, and general record keeping information. The second part of the survey is a complete inventory of all products used or stored on the mine property, with an estimate of the annual consumption of each item.

The third portion consists of responses to interviews with employees from each employee group or unique occupation with observation of work environment, the number of workers potentially exposed to the inventoried chemicals, products and physical agents, and the task performed. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
