Social Economic and Demographic Transformations and Attitudes toward Migrant Workers in Taiwan

Attitudes toward migrant workers has been considered as an prominent indicator of the degree of development; it also has gained added significance as individual nation-states attempt to reconstruct its cultural and value identity in order to deal with increasing societal diversity.

Description

Based upon societal attitudes towards migrant workers, the major objective of this research is to explore how Taiwanese will be able to deal with cultural diversity in the process of rapid social change.

The study estimates several regression models predicting three separate dimensions of attitude toward migrant workers and including four sets of individual characteristics as independent variables. The result shows strongest and most consistent positive effects of both contact opportunities and life satisfaction on the attitude dimensions. Conversely, people of native born and working class exhibit the most opposite attitude.

Education, urban experience, and male also have positive influence on separate attitude dimensions. Age has a negative effect on social distance attitude toward migrant workers.
