The Patient-Provider Relationship in Diabetes Care: A Narrative Review

Diabetes Mellitus is a prevalent chronic condition, requiring effective management through a patient-centred approach, where the patient-provider relationship is crucial.

Description

This review synthesizes existing literature on the patient-provider relationship in the context of patient-centred care, exploring its conceptualizations and the characteristics of effective interactions in diabetes care.

Additionally, the review examines how strong patient provider relationships impact diabetes outcomes. Understanding these relationships can enhance patient centred care, benefiting both individuals with diabetes and their healthcare providers.

Exploring the Patient-Provider Relationship in Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) is a complex chronic condition requiring intricate self-management. Patient-centred care (PCC), focusing on effective patient-provider relationships (PPR), is crucial for successful management. This study explores factors influencing effective PPR from the perspectives of adults living with T1DM (ALWD) and specialized Diabetes Healthcare Professionals (DHCPs). Using semi-structured interviews, 24 ALWDs and 7 DHCPs were recruited via diabetes organizations’ social media platforms.

The interviews were analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis, revealing three shared themes: (1) The importance of being seen and heard as a whole person, highlighting the need for a holistic, biopsychosocial approach by DHCPs; (2) A collaborative alliance of two experts, emphasizing shared decision-making where both ALWD and DHCPs contribute their expertise, fostering empowerment; (3) The impact of the healthcare system, recognizing that systemic factors can support or hinder the efficacy of PPR.

The findings suggest that addressing communication, patient empowerment, and systemic challenges is vital for effective patient-provider relationships in diabetes care.

Thesis is embargoed until 31 December 2026.
