Listed in DANS Data Station Social Sciences and Humanities

Description

The interviewee was born on 25 August, 1924 in Vlissingen. He came from a rich family, something that would have significant influence on his wartime experiences.

During the occupation he went into hiding, together with three other students and a young Jewish boy, in a hiding place in the woods. They were betrayed and he was arrested, taken first to prison and then to Amersfoort concentration camp. He talks extensively about life in the camp.

He mentions the camp guards, the daily torture, the work and the hierarchy among prisoners. He then worked for a short time in Germany, after which he went into hiding at his parents’ home in Aerdenhout. From there he became actively involved with the resistance.

As a member of the Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten he was involved in the arrest of Pieter Menten. The interviewee also talks about his postwar life as an activist in the Netherlands, Mexico, and the United States.
