Replication Data for: BGUW, Fig 23.1 through 23.7, Natal dispersal vs presence of close kin in natal territory, 30 July 2026

Listed in data.InDoRES

I created this file from File = BGUW, ALLdispersal, 06 July 2021.

Description

Copious notes for this file are immediately below I will use BGUW, Dispersal vs kin, 09 July, 2021, to investigate the effect of kin within the natal clan on natal dispersal In other words, I will re-analyze the data from Hoogland 2013 (Science) for BTPDs, GPDs, and UPDs. What will be new?

Two things: (1) I now have incorporated GPD data from RMC and VCC (described below) , and (b) I now have completed analyses for all WTPD data BGUW = information from black-tailed, Gunnison's, Utah, and white-tailed prairie dogs This file has now been checked TWO TIMES on 10 July 2019-- once by JLH alone, once by JLH + Judy Coterie size or Clan size = size of clan in year-X for dispersing prairie dog in year-X. Coterie size or Clan size = clan size of disperser's or non-disperser's natal clan when disperser or nondisperser was a YEARLING--i.e., NOT the clan size when disperser or nondisperser was a weaned juvenile Coterie or Clan size = clan size from list of clan compositions in May = number of adults and yearlings living in the same territory Species = 1 = BTPDs, =2 = GPDs, 3 = UPDs, 4 = WTPDs NCTYRL = 1 = still in natal coterie/clan territory as yearling = no natal dispersal NCTYRL = 0 = NOT still in natal coterie/clan territory as yearling = natal dispersal DID occur Mother = 1 = mother still in natal clan territory Mother = 0 = mother NOT still in natal clan territory Sisters = number of littermate sisters still in natal clan territory as yearlings Brothers = number of littermate brothers still in natal clan territory as yearlings Coterie size or Clan size = number of adults and yearlings living in same territory in May For more information about Coterie and Clan sizes, see Chapters 9-11 in Hoogland 2026 Sex = 1 = male, Sex = 2 = female NCTASYRL = 0 = disperser = yearling that dispersed away from natal clan territory before first copulation NCTASYRL = 1 = NONdisperser = yearling that REMAINED in natal territory before first copulation Dog = number of PD for SYSTAT analyses.

Dog is for convenience only, so IGNORE THIS NUMBER FOR ALL STATS. In combination with year, Dog is unique for each prairie dog of each species because I only scored dispersal ONE TIME for each yearling To reduce confusion for WTPDs and GPDs at VCNP, I included variable = PD eartag Another OLDFile name = Dispersal vs nearby kin, 01 July 2019 Note on 06 July 2019. This file through case 1870 includes all data for WTPDs, Early checks for most of this file were in 2012, for the following citation: Hoogland JL. 2013.

Prairie dogs disperse when all close kin have disappeared. Science 339:1205-1207. New data added on 08 July 2019.

These data are from RMC and VCC of VCNP. These data now checked TWO TIMES--once by JLH alone, once with Judy On 09 July 2019, I notice that three lines of UPD data (species = 3) were listed as GPD data (species = 2). The lines were 1377, 1378, and 1470.

I change all three cases to species = 3. This will affect the UPD and the GPD stats. Note that the GPD stats now include data from PEFO, VCNP's RMC, and VCNP's VCC.

As noted above, the numbers in Column-D (Dog, from an old SYSTAT FILE) are of little use Another OLDFile name = BGUW, All Dispersal, 07 June 2021 The SYSTAT output from this EXCEL file is IDENTICAL to output form 10 July 2019. Note immediately above says that I checked everything on 09 July 2019. But note: New variables in this file include Nctlife and Age of dispersal Data for these last two variables come from File = BGUW, Dispersal vs age, 04 June 2021 See note immediately below for File name = BGUW, Dispersal vs age, 04 June 2021 I pasted data from File name = BGUW, Dispersal vs age, 04 June 2021 into THIS EXCEL file.

Notice that my pasting allows me to verify that data for variables = Mother, Sisters, Bros from File name = BGUW, Dispersal vs age, 04 June 2021, are on same lines for file = ALL Dispersal, 07 June 2021. These variables all matched up, so I have assumed that data for Nctlife and Age of dispersal are also in the right places Note well, however: I added data to this EXCEL older file. So, perfect match up will not possible for those cases when I added new data Note, for example, that the older file did not have GPD data from RMC or VCC colonies.

In SYSTAT, I will create variable = DISPEVER = Dispersal ever = 1 - nctlife. Dispever = 0 means that the prairie dog never dispersed Dispever = 1 means that the prairie DID disperse at some time in its life, at any age So, I will use variable = Dispever to make histogram of whether prairie of either sex ever dispersed vs species And I will use variable = Nctlife to make histogram of prairie dogs of either sex that remained in NCT for life Nctlife = 0 means that prairie dog did NOT remain in NCT for life Nctlife = 1 means that prairie dog DID remain in NCT for life--i.e., no dispersal Note well: No data for LAST YEAR of research at every study-colony, because obviously we could not track dispersal in the year after the last year for any study colony Last year for BTPDs with JLH at WCNP was 1988 (I have not used BTPD data from Loughry only in 1989); last year for GPDs at PEFO was 1995; last year for UPDs at BCNP was 2005; last year for WTPDs at ANWR was 2012 (I have not used WTPD data from my Ph.D. research of 1974-1976); last year for GPDs at RMC was 2016; and last year for GPDs at VCC was 2018 Sisters = littermate sisters Brothers = littermate brothers So, all kinships in this file based on maternal kinships.

I have made NO ATTEMPT to examine dispersal vs paternal kinships. Another OLDFile name = BGUW, Dispersal vs age, 04 June 2021 I created this file from SYSTAT file = Disperse.sys, which I created on 13 Oct 2011 Note in hard copy says that I checked this file through case 1844 THREE TIMES. But this file has 1845 cases.

Where the difference of 1? On 07 June 2021, I did not look for this difference of 1. Note on 08 June 2021.

How did I compute variable = Nctlife? It is NOT an accurate indicator of whether a prairie dog remained in its natal territory for life. Perhaps others and I should ignore variable = Nctlife Note on 03 July 2021.

Today I make corrections for a few WTPD entries. This file should now be 100% correct. I have checked data for all four species TWO TIMES.

See the many notes above. Another OLD File name is now BGUW, ALLdispersal, 05 July 2021 See SYSTAT output to show that numbers and stats for BGUW, ALLdispersal, 05 July 2021, are IDENTICAL to numbers and stats for file = BGUW, Dispersal vs kin, Final ages, 05 July 2021-- but I made a few changes on 05 and 06 July 2021 to BGUW, Alldispersal, 06 July 2021--so this might not be true anymore On 06 July 2021, I verify that I have entered dispersal data FOR EVERY GPD in our GPD litter summaries for RMC and VCC.

I need to add a few GPDs that I had missed when I created the file. Remember: No data from 2016, because that was my last year of research at RMC. And no data from 2018, because that was my last year of research at VCC.

On 09 July 2021, I check WTPD data for Mother, Sisters, and Bros, and I make ONE CHANGE Born in 2010, 3SBS (F55) had one littermate brother (male-33) This file is now ready FOR ALL FOUR SPECIES for analysis of natal dispersal/NCTasyrl vs the presence of kin in the natal clan GPD Redondo Meadow Colony (RMC, studied in 2013 through 2016) was at Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP). GPD Visitor Center Colony (VCC, studied in 2017 and 2018) was also at VCNP.

GPD colony at Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) was studied from 1989 through 1995. Allkin = All kin = Cumulative number of all kin in home territory. Allkin this includes mother, all littermate sisters, and all littermate brothers Some sisters = 0 = 0 sisters in home territory Some sisters = 1 = at least one sister in home territory Some brothers = 0 = 0 brothers in home territory Some brothers = 1 = at least one brother in home territory Data in this EXCEL file are the RAW DATA for Figures 23.1 through 23.7 for ALL FOUR SPECIES.

Repeat: Data in this EXCEL file used for SEVEN different figures (23.1 through 23.7) of Chapter 23.

Note

Many of the above notes are confusing. They MIGHT be useful to me if I need to further investigate any issues of natal dispersal vs presence of close kin in natal territory. File name = BGUW, Fig 23.1 through 23.7, Natal dispersal vs presence of close kin in natal territory, 30 July 2026
