Mayflies (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) diversity and distribution across different freshwater habitats
Listed in RADaR - Digital Repository of Archived Publications of the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”
Assessment of mayfly communities is essential for holistic and effective conservation planning and management of freshwater ecosystems.
Description
Therefore, we analysed 95 sites predefined to five different waterbody types across the territory of Serbia and recorded 34 species from 11 mayfly families. Cloeon dipterum, Potamanthus luteus, and Baetis rhodani were the most abundant species in terms of abundance and distribution across all waterbody types.
Strictly protected species according to national legislation and endangered according to IUCN criteria: Baetis pavidus, Epeorus yougoslavicus, and Palingenia longicauda were recorded. The highest values of alpha diversity components were recorded in medium lowland rivers, while mayfly communities in artificial canals and reservoirs showed lower values. The highest beta diversity was recorded in large lowland rivers, with species turnover as the main component and a low nestedness.

Values these components were almost identical in the other four waterbody types. Ephemeroptera community composition showed a clear separation between sites with coarse substrate from those with fine substrate, although some overlap is present. Indicator species were identified for specific waterbody types.
Oxygen concentration and saturation, phosphate concentration, and altitude were identified as key environmental drivers of mayfly distribution. These findings demonstrate that Ephemeroptera communities are strongly influenced by hydromorphological and physicochemical conditions, which underpins their sensitivity to habitat alteration and supports their application in freshwater management and conservation strategies, especially in regions where freshwater ecosystems are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic pressures.
