Public health teams use this data to track trends and guide prevention efforts, such as sharing health tips, increasing testing, or offering more vaccination options. Wastewater monitoring helps communities detect rising infection rates early.

People with certain illnesses shed tiny pieces of virus when they use the bathroom or wash up—even when they don’t feel sick. These fragments travel through the sewage system, where samples are collected and tested. The Wastewater Viral Activity Level (WVAL) shows how much virus is present in wastewater and ranges from very low to very high: • Up to 2: Very Low • Greater than 2 and up to 3.4: Low • Greater than 3.4 and up to 5.3: Moderate • Greater than 5.3 and up to 7.8: High • Greater than 7.8: Very High States and territories may have a higher density of sampling sites in certain geographic areas, so the median wastewater viral activity level may not represent the wastewater viral activity level for every community in the state or territory.
