Minerals Availability and Industry Locator System Files (MAS / MILS)

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency developed MAS / MILS to systematically measure and classify identified domestic and foreign mineral resources according to their respective extraction technologies, economics, and availability.

Description

MAS / MILS also provided for the systematic storage, timely update, and rapid retrieval of comprehensive information on mining operations, mineral deposits / occurrences and processing plants throughout the world. This series consists of data from two inter-related minerals data systems, the Minerals Availability System (MAS) and Minerals Industry Locator System (MILS).

The MAS files contain data on worldwide known mining operations, mineral deposits / occurrences and processing plants. There are as many as 12 inter-related MAS data files for each geographic area: states, the District of Columbia, and foreign areas. The available data files, or "tables", are: Bibliography (BIB Table, reference material relating to the mineral property); Comments (CMT Table, evaluator's comments or remarks relating to the mineral property); Commodity (CMO Table; identifies the numerous products that can be recovered from a mineral deposit); Geometry (GEO Table; identifies the formation characteristics, overall shape, and relative dimensions of the ore body); History of Production (HP Table; historical production figures in tons); History of Exploration (HX Table; includes data on the method of exploration, year of work, and year of information); Lithology (LIT Table; used to describe when and how mineralization occurred among the rock formations associated with the deposit); Lithology - Rock (ROC Table; provides a description of individual rock types that comprise the lithology of this mineral formation); Minerals (MIN Table; describes the mineralogy of the deposit including geologic age, name, and grain size); Name (NAM Table; contains all of the alternate or secondary names associated with the mineral property); Ownership (OWN Table; owner / operator identification information); and Resources (RES Table; contains published resource information relating to the mineral deposit ).

The MILS files contain data on more than 200,000 mineral locations and processing plants in the U.S. and foreign countries. MILS has information about the operational status and location of a deposit and includes: geographic codes (state, county, foreign or domestic), name of deposit or operation, current status, geographic coordinates, topographic map name and scale, Public Land Survey system location, year of discovery and production, topographic and climatic indicators, company name, and production methods.

There is one MILS file for each state, the District of Columbia, and foreign areas. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
