Phonological competition over time during human spoken word recognition (replotted from Allopenna, Magnuson, & Tanenhaus, 1998)

Listed in ZivaHub

Human eye-tracking data from Allopenna, Magnuson & Tanenhaus (1998), the behavioral benchmark for the models: proportion of fixations to target (e.g., beaker), cohort (beetle), rhyme (speaker), and unrelated pictures over time from target word onset.

Description

This shows the now classic pattern that is considered a key behavioral benchmark for models of human spoken word recognition: fixation proportions to cohorts (words sharing the same onset as the target) rise early with the target; rhyme fixation proportions rise later; both cohort and rhyme peak fixation proportions exceed the unrelated baseline peak.
