Replication Data for: Multiscale drivers of accidental epiphytism in temperate Europe

Listed in FDM-DOI-Vergabe

This data repository contains the field-survey data, curated community-science records, environmental derivatives, model outputs, and analysis scripts associated with the study “Multiscale drivers of accidental epiphytism in temperate Europe”.

Description

The study investigates accidental epiphytes, terrestrial plant species that opportunistically establish in tree crowns, across a coastal western European transect from the Netherlands to northern Spain.

The repository supports analyses of how accidental epiphyte occurrence, abundance, and richness vary with habitat setting, host-tree size, and species-specific climatic positioning. The repository includes raw field data from 40 forest and non-forest plots, processed iNaturalist observation data, taxonomic lookup files, field-site GIS data, derived environmental tables, Bayesian model outputs, figure-generation scripts, and run logs.

The main field dataset records site information, DBH-stratified tree counts, accidental epiphyte observations, host-tree identifiers, and site- or DBH-category-level abundance and richness summaries. iNaturalist observation identifiers are used to link field records to observation-specific information, photographs, and field characteristics such as epiphyte size, height on tree, and growing site. Large external environmental raster files are not redistributed in this repository.

These include CHELSA climate layers, GHSL built-up surface data, and the MPI-BGC forest-age dataset. Expected file paths and dataset references are provided so that these files can be downloaded from the original data providers if full environmental extraction steps need to be reproduced. Processed derivative tables are included where possible to support downstream analyses without redistributing large external rasters.

The scripts are numbered in approximate workflow order and cover iNaturalist data processing, field-data merging, exploratory summaries, host-status and DBH analyses, latitudinal patterns, species-specific environmental niche analyses, Ellenberg indicator summaries, Bayesian modelling, and figure generation. Logs are provided to document previous script execution. All data generated during this study, together with the scripts used for data processing, statistical analysis, and figure generation, are available for private peer review and will be made publicly available in an open-access repository upon publication.
