NOx and SO2 Emission Data Bases for Atmospheric Chemistry Studies from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)

Listed in NASA Earthdata CMR

Global data bases of trace gas emissions to the atmosphere have been compiled for use in atmospheric chemistry studies.

Description

The data bases are global emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). These compounds are important for their role as contributors to acid wet and dry precipitation.

NOx takes part in the photochemical production of tropospheric ozone (O3). The major sources of NOx include fossil fuel burning, lightning, emissions from the biosphere, stratospheric injections, and biomass burning. SO2 sources are dominated by fossil fuel burning, industry (ore smelting), and volcanic eruptions.

The fossil fuel sources for both NOx and SO2 are the largest contributor. The resolution of the data bases is a 1 degree by 1 degree grid based on Matthews (1983) and Matthews and Fung (1987). Three databases have been provided.

The first is an inventory of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from fossil fuel combustion. The second is an inventory of emissions of SO2 also from fossil fuel combustion. These data bases are described in Dignon (1991).

The third data base is a global inventory of NOx emissions from terrestrial biomass burning and is given seasonally for the globe (Dignon and Penner, 1991; Dignon et al, 1991) for the months of January and July. The units of emission for the inventories are given as the mass in metric tons of nitrogen (N) for the NOx inventories and metric tons of sulfur (S) for the SO2 inventory for each 1x1 degree grid. The inventory for NOx from biomass burning is for January, which represents cumulated emissions for the months from October to March; and for July, which represent cumulated emissions for the months from April to September.
