Macy Pascual: Cracking the Blueprint: How Mushrooms Make Blue Pigments

Listed in ZivaHub

Azulenes are vibrant pigments responsible for the striking blue colours of mushrooms like the edible indigo milk cap (Lactarius indigo) and Aotearoa’s native werewere-kōkako (Entoloma hochstetteri).

Description

Despite their potential as sustainable colourants, the molecular machinery behind fungal azulene production has remained a mystery. To solve this, my research investigates the genetic, enzymatic and chemical basis behind azulene biosynthesis in Lactarius mushrooms.

Decoding this process not only offers a lead towards deciphering azulene production in the werewere-kōkako, but also opens up new opportunities for natural pigment bio-engineering.
