Curriculum Design and Evaluation for Multicultural Social Studies for Elementary Schools

This paper reports on a case study which was undertaken to study issues fundamental to a multicultural social studies program.

Description

During the study, a class of multiethnic elementary students was accepted the multicultural social studies program. The data reported reflect the Han and aboriginal student\' learning experience.

Results concerning four themes of the research are discussed: cultural perspectives, operational curriculum, and classroom climate. Findings indicate that the multicultural social studies program can improve students\' multicultural perspectives and cultural concepts. Students of different ethnic backgrounds may have different perspectives of culture, students prefer student-centered curriculum, the multicultural classroom should be open and democratic.

All of these factors influence students\' learning should be taken into account when planning a multicultural social studies curriculum.
