Effects of hydrological restoration and crab farming on sexual reproduction characteristics of salt-alkali marsh reed population

Listed in ScienceDB

Phragmites australis is the dominant species in the saline-alkali marsh plant community of the western Songnen Plain.

Description

Restoring and expanding the Phragmites population is beneficial for Conservation and restoration of the ecologically fragile western Songnen Plain. Compared with rhizome recovery methods, seed collection of reeds is less destructive and more readily available, but Reeds exhibit weak sexual reproductive capacity and low seed germination rate.

On October 12,2021, at the Songnen Plain of the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences...The degraded area, hydrological restoration area, and crab farming area of the former Western Saline-Alkali Wetland Ecological Research Station were sampled for reed harvest, with growth indicators and sexual characteristics of the reeds determined.Reproductive indicators were analyzed to assess the impact of hydrological restoration and crab farming on the sexual reproductive characteristics of reeds.

The study results indicate that in crab farming areas and hydrological restoration zones, the reproductive characteristics of reeds...The average values of plant height, spike length, number of panicles, panicle emergence rate, total flowers per panicle, and seed number in the reed population were significantly higher than those in the degraded area (p<0.05). In the crab farming area,The mean plant height and panicle emergence rate of the reed population were significantly higher than those in the hydrological restoration area (p<0.05); the mean population density of the reed population in the river crab farming area was significantly lower than that in the hydrological restoration area.Degraded area (p<0.05); the average total carbon and total nitrogen content of reed populations in degraded area were significantly lower than those in hydrological restoration area and crab farming area (p<0.05).The mean value of C/N was significantly higher than that of the hydrological restoration area and the crab farming area (p0.05).

Hydrological restoration and crab farming could promote the transfer of carbon and nitrogen nutrients to the reed spikes. The results showed that the sex reproduction ability of the population was improved.
