Data set on the antifungal activity of essential oils (EOs) and their bioactive constituents against papaya pathogens

Listed in REDU - Unicamp Institutional Research Data Repository

This dataset contains experimental data generated in Chapter 1 of a doctoral research project developed at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in partnership with Embrapa Meio Ambiente.

Description

The dataset comprises in vitro experiments designed to evaluate the antifungal activity of essential oils, their major bioactive constituents, and constituent mixtures against important fungal pathogens associated with postharvest diseases of papaya fruits, including Phoma caricae-papayae, Alternaria alternata, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Fusarium solani.

The experiments were conducted using agar dilution and paper disc diffusion methods to determine mycelial growth inhibition, inhibition distance, and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the evaluated treatments. Essential oils, isolated constituents, and ternary mixtures of constituents were tested at different concentrations under controlled laboratory conditions using completely randomized experimental designs with multiple replicates.

The dataset is organized into five independent experiments: Experiment 1: screening of essential oils regarding antifungal activity against papaya pathogens; Experiment 2: determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of selected essential oils; Experiment 3: evaluation of the antifungal activity of major constituents of selected essential oils; Experiment 4: evaluation of the antifungal activity of mixtures of major essential oil constituents; Experiment 5: determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of mixtures of major essential oil constituents.

Data files are provided in spreadsheet format (.xlsx) and include information on treatments, concentrations, experimental replicates, fungal colony diameter, inhibition distance, and percentage of inhibition, according to the corresponding experiment. These data may support studies involving natural antifungal compounds, postharvest disease management, and alternative strategies for reducing the use of synthetic fungicides in papaya production systems.
