Railroad Accident and Incident Reporting Files

The agency created these files to prepare statistical information about hazardous conditions on railroads in the United States.

Description

It used this information to carry out its regulatory responsibilities under the Federal Railroad Safety Act of 1970 and the Accident Reports Act of 1910. This series consists of two parts with data on accidents and incidents involving 1) rail equipment, and 2) rail - highway grade crossings.

The rail equipment records have data on rail equipment accidents and in cidents connected with the operation of standing or moving on-track equipment of railroads in the United States that involve collisions, derailments, fires, explosions, acts of God, and similar events. Only accidents and incidents that result in more than $6,300 of reportable damage are included. A record includes the name of the reporting railroad and any other railroad involved, date and time of accident or incident, location and type of track at site of accident or incident, number of cars transporting hazardous material, weather conditions at the time of the accident or incident, nature and operations of equipment involved, the amount of reportable damage sustained by the equipment, number of reportable injuries and deaths, and the nature of the cause of the accident or incident.

Rail - highway grade crossing accidents and incidents are reportable events that include any impact, regardless of severity, between a railroad on-track equipment consist and any user of a public or private crossing site. The crossing site includes sidewalks and pathways at or associated with the crossing. Highway users include, but are not limited to: automobiles, buses, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, farm vehicles, construction vehicles, roadway maintenance vehicles, and pedestrians.

A record includes the name and code of the reporting and other involved railroads; accident / incident number; U.S. Department of Transportation - Association of American Railroads grade crossing identification number; date and time of accident; nearest station; location of accident / incident; name or number of highway; type, speed and direction of highway vehicle involved; nature of railroad equipment and track; weather conditions; nature of signaling equipment; and information concerning the motorist and other occupants of the highway vehicle.
