Fish Oil Modulation of Immune Response in Aging

Listed in Teesside University Research Data Repository

Description

This dataset contains the experimental data underlying the study “Long-lasting effect of fish oil supplementation attenuates inflammaging in Wistar rats through improvement of immune cell responses and modulation of cytokines secretion.” The dataset comprises individual-level data from male Wistar rats evaluated at 15 and 18 months of age, including animals receiving fish oil supplementation and animals evaluated after a 90-day supplementation withdrawal period.

The experimental groups were: C15 (15-month-old control), FO15 (15-month-old fish oil-supplemented), C18 (18-month-old control), and FO18 (18-month-old rats evaluated 90 days after fish oil withdrawal). Fish oil was administered at 1.0 g/kg/day for 60 days, beginning at 13 months of age. The study included eight animals per experimental group.

The dataset includes measurements of innate and adaptive immune responses. Innate immune parameters include macrophage and polymorphonuclear neutrophil phagocytosis, basal and PMA-stimulated superoxide production, and basal and PMA-stimulated hydrogen peroxide production. Adaptive immune parameters include lymphocyte proliferation from spleen and gut-associated lymphoid tissues under basal conditions and following Concanavalin A (ConA) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation.

Cytokine measurements include plasma and cell-culture concentrations of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). Body weight, spleen weight, and gut-associated lymph node weight are also included. The dataset supports the statistical analyses presented in the manuscript, including univariate comparisons and multivariate analyses of immune, inflammatory, innate, and adaptive immune profiles using Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA) and PERMANOVA.

The data provide the underlying experimental measurements used to investigate age-associated immune dysfunction and the persistent immunomodulatory effects of omega-3 fish oil supplementation during the transition toward immunosenescence. The study was approved by the Animal Use Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Paraná (CEUA No. 1497/2022).
