Six weeks of isometric resistance training on corticospinal and cortico-reticular adaptation in previously untrained adult males

Listed in Teesside University Research Data Repository

The data pertains to subject characteristics, isometric force production, electrical and magnetic stimulation responses, and reaction time from the StartReact test in the elbow flexors.

Description

Such neuromuscular measurements are purported to reflect corticospinal and cortico-reticular functioning. The subjects are young, healthy but previously untrained young adults.

The hypothesis proposed that resistance training, by increasing strength, would reduce silent period duration and modify the effects of a loud sound in a manner consistent with increased cortico-reticulospinal excitability. Isometric force was measured, then converted to torque, using a custom-built dynamometer with the elbow joint at 90 degrees of flexion and the elbow raised to shoulder height. Reaction time to the StartReact test was from the presentation of the light to the initial burst in the electromyogram of the biceps brachii.

The three conditions were light cue only, light+80 dB auditory cue and light+120 dB auditory cue, presented in randomized order. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was performed using 120% of active motor threshold while contracting to 10% of MVC. A D-70 figure-of-eight coil was used to induce posterior-anterior current within the primary motor cortex.

StartleTMS was used by combining the 120 dB auditory cue followed by TMS 50 ms later to modify the motor-evoked potential (MEP) amplitude; expected to be suppressed. The training was six weeks in duration and all training was performed isometrically using specially constructed devices.
