The agency carried out this study to evaluate violence in the nation's public schools.

Description

The Research Triangle Institute compiled these data under contract to the agency. The agency used these data to prepare the report "Violent Schools - Safe Schools: The Safe School Study Report to Congress." This series contains data collected from samples of 5,578 public elementary and secondary schools and 642 public secondary schools in the United States.

The files contain data reported by principal s on each violent or criminal act in their schools during a one-month period and on their schools institutional structure. Also included are personal demographic and educational attainment data for teachers and students and data for any incidents of crime or school violence for which they were a victim. Data documenting the socioeconomic characteristics of the school district where each school is located is also available.
