A Study of Voting Behavior and Political Democratization in Taiwan: the 1993 Election for County Magistrates and City Mayors (Taipei County)

This research project analyzed the data collected by the National Chengchi University Election Study Center concerning the 1993 City Mayors and County Magistrates elections.
Description
In accordance with the needs of our research, one city or county was selected from northern Taiwan and one from southern Taiwan. These two districts were surveyed by telephone.
After careful consideration, Taipei County, which featured candidates from each of the three major parties, was chosen as the subject of our research. We carried out two surveys. The surveys were of a panel design, so that we could observe the changes in attitudes among individual voters.

The frame adopted for this survey was the telephone listings for Taipei County. In order to avoid being unable to select those residences with unlisted telephone numbers, we first took a systematic random sample of telephone numbers, and then added one to the last digit. Respondents were chosen from within the selected household according to a set intra-household sampling procedure. 1153 successful interviews were completed.
