Electroabsorption modulator for hybrid integrated photonic transceiver: design, simulation, fabrication and characterization

Effective solutions are urgently needed to upgrade current systems cost-effectively, such as Passive Optical Networks (PONs). Increasing transmission bit rates in PONs requires a new solution for modulating/detecting data to replace the current systems using directly modulated lasers whose bandwidth is challenging to increase due to high chirp.

A compact and low-cost optical modulator with high modulation speed becomes essential, however available modulators in the market are either expensive, have a large footprint, and/or operate at high drive voltage.<br>
