Gross State Product Estimates Files

Listed in Harvard Dataverse

The agency created these estimates so that the public and private sectors could study economic trends for states and regions and analyze the regional impact of national economic trends.

Description

Federal and state government agencies used the estimates as a basis for allocating funds and determining matching grants. They also used the estimates in econometric models, such as those used to project energy and water use, and to project the effects of taxation and the need for public services.

Academic researchers used the estimates for theoretical and applied economic research. Businesses, trade associations, and labor organizations used the estimates for market research. The series contains annual estimates of gross state product (GSP) for all states and the District of Columbia.

The records contain GSP estimates for 61 industries divided into four components: (1) compensation of employees; (2) proprietors' income with inventory valuation adjustment and capital consumption allowances; (3) indirect business tax and nontax liability; and (4) other charges. The estimates are in both current and constant dollars. Current-dollar estimates reflect changes in the command over resources associated with production, while constant-dollar estimates reflect changes in the physical volume of production.

The industries are grouped by standard industrial classification (SIC) codes. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
