Transglobe Expedition at-sea observations of seabirds and cetaceans (1979-1982)

The Transglobe Expedition was a groundbreaking polar circumnavigation of the Earth, completed between 1979 and 1982, marking the first and only successful surface journey along the Greenwich Meridian via both the North and South Poles.

Description

At-sea observations of megafauna was undertaken from the expeditions ship M/V Benjamin Bowring (ex Kista Dan) from South Africa to Fimbulisen, Antarctica, from New Zealand to the Ross Sea, the transit from Australia to the United States of America and finally the voyage from the Artic to United Kingdom.

Observations were made for three one-hour watches each day. All birds visible within 500 m of the ship were counted in consecutive 10-minute periods.
