Translating Anne Weber into English: A Case Study in L2 Literary Translation

Listed in ZivaHub

The translation of literature into a second language – L2 literary translation – is typically seen as a niche practice often reserved for exceptionally talented individuals.

Description

Many scholars dismiss it as irrelevant to translation theory, resulting in its exclusion from mainstream translation studies.

This study seeks to address the conspicuous lack of research exploring the theoretically productive and creatively fertile aspects of L2 literary translation, particularly in the context of translingual literature.

By producing high-quality translations of selected early works by the German-French author, self-translator, and literary translator Anne Weber (1964– ), my study seeks to answer two main research questions: 1) How can L2 literary translation be used effectively to translate a translingual author’s work into English in a way that not only preserves but also highlights the original work’s capacity to challenge linguistic and national hegemonies?; and 2) How does L2 literary translation serve as an alternative hermeneutic process that contributes new insights to the theory and practice of translation?

This project seeks to answer these questions by pursuing three main objectives.

First, to provide a critical analysis that challenges the widespread marginalisation of L2 literary translation in academic research and practice. Second, to position Anne Weber’s bilingualism and unique approach to self-translation as a central case study that illustrates the effectiveness of L2 literary translation as a specialised strategy for translating her works. Third, to produce my own sample translations of Anne Weber’s works alongside a comprehensive discussion of the translation process and a philosophical treatise that underscores the value of L2 literary translation as a hermeneutic practice.

Designed as an exploratory case study, my thesis validates the value of L2 literary translation and paves the way for further research.

Future studies could explore broader applications of L2 literary translation – for example, of minor or postcolonial literatures – or authors who see themselves as literary representatives of a hybrid or “third” culture, revealing the limitations and contradictions of binary, essentialist structures. Such research could significantly broaden the horizons of translation studies and arguably lead to the development of new theoretical frameworks that reflect the reality of transnational writers and translators in the 21st century.

For the time being, my thesis marks a significant step in my evolving journey as a translator and scholar.

It has allowed me to channel my experiences as an aspiring literary translator in both L1 and L2, educated in different cultural and linguistic landscapes – Germany, South Africa, and New Zealand – into a deeper exploration of the biases against L2 translators in translation studies. As a key case study, Anne Weber’s work has been instrumental in shaping my ethical and hermeneutic approach to literary translation, profoundly deepening my understanding of the nuances of literary translation, and the role and intricacies of L2 translation in particular.

Conceived and executed at the intersection of personal experience and academic curiosity, my hope is that my thesis stands as an authentic and valuable contribution to the field of literary translation studies, highlighting the theoretical implications of L2 literary translation and its practical relevance in a globalised literary landscape.
