Regenerative tourism for sustainable transformation: a systematic literature review

<p>In the context of the global urgency for sustainability transformation, regenerative tourism has emerged as a paradigm that emphasizes ecosystem restoration, community empowerment, and systemic socio-ecological change.
Description
This study conducts a systematic literature review of 67 peer-reviewed articles published between 2021 and 2025 from Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases. This review examines conceptual developments, key dimensions, and research gaps within the field.
The review follows PRISMA guidelines. This review emphasizes a rapidly growing body of literature characterized by a predominance of qualitative approaches and a geographical concentration in the Global North. Five constructs were identified through thematic and conceptual synthesis, namely, place-based experience, stakeholder collaboration, transformative learning, circular tourism, and regenerative outcomes.

Grounded in these findings, the study proposes an integrative conceptual framework that links individual transformation, community engagement, operational systems, governance structures, and broader climate-positive outcomes across multiple levels. In addition, the study outlines a future research agenda emphasizing measurable indicators of regenerative impact, methodological diversification, and greater inclusion of Global South perspectives.
This study advances regenerative tourism by examining its theoretical and practical implications.</p>
