The agency collected these data annually to determine the characteristics of persons getting married and divorced.
Description
The data were used to conduct a wide range of analyses. This series contains social survey information on selected marriages and divorces in the United States.
Marriage information includes the date and place of marriage, as well as information on the bride and groom pertaining to birth, place of residence, education, and previous marital status. Data are obtained from certifi cates of marriages occurring in each registration State. Records of each State in the marriage-registration area were sampled at one of five sampling rates used in processing 1968-95 data.

Data are weighted, based on the sampling fraction of the reporting State.Divorce data files contain social survey information on selected divorces that occur in the United States and the Virgin Islands. Information is included on the date and place of marriage, length of marriage, and date and place of divorce. Additional information includes details concerning the age, race, resident status, education level and prior marriages for each former husband and wife.
The number of children in the family and custody decisions regarding children under the age of 18 is also included. Data are obtained from certificates of divorces occurring in each registration State. Records from each State in the divorce-registration area were sampled at one of five sampling rates used in processing 1968-90 data.
Data are weighted, based on the sampling fraction of the reporting State. This data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC). See the ARC catalog entry for this series for more information on this data and how to order it.
