Similar responses to EQ-5D-5L by two elicitation methods: Visual Analogue Scale and Time Trade-Off

Listed in figshare

Objectives: This study aimed to identify conditions under which the two methods, visual analogue scale (VAS) or the time trade-off (TTO), yield similar value sets for the EQ-5D-5L.

Description

Methods

A homogeneous sample of medical students valued 25 hypothetical EQ-5D-5L health states, selected by an orthogonal array design, using either the VAS or the TTO. All interviews were conducted through computer-assisted personal interviewing, and the elicited values were rescaled onto a -1 ~ 0 ~ 1 continuum. Value sets were estimated with generalized least squares random-effects regressions in which the independent variables were 20 dummy variables representing levels 2-5 of the five dimensions, with or without four additional constant terms (N2-N5).

Results: 492 medical students were included, with a mean age of 23.30 ± 6.51 years; 59.76% were female. Except for the 14444 status, there were no statistically significant differences between observed TTO and VAS scores. All models and all coefficients were statistically significant (P < 0.001).

Models 3 and 4 showed excellent goodness of fit (adjusted R² > 0.89; MAE < 0.05). Differences between corresponding coefficients of the 20 dummy variables never exceeded 0.202 across models, and Pearson correlation coefficients between observed and predicted values exceeded 0.93 in every model. The fitted VAS and TTO curves largely overlapped, indicating strong agreement between the two valuation methods.

Conclusions: Under certain conditions the VAS and the TTO produce similar responses to the EQ-5D-5L, suggesting that the two methods are intrinsically equivalent, which will enhance policymakers' confidence in HRQoL measurement techniques.
