The agency established this series to facilitate the collection of reported oil spill data, as required by Executive Order 11735, dated August 3, 1973, and the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972.

Description

The agency used the data to regulate oil pollution prevention and response activities in United States waterways. This series consists of information relating to marine pollution incidents.

The data was captured each time a petroleum spill occurred within the U.S. Coast Guard's area of ju risdiction or a U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office responded in aid of another on-scene coordinator, according to the National Contingency Plan. The information includes: date of the incident, port's district code, waterbody code, state code, federally funded project number, responding unit's district, investigation work hours, operation in progress at time of spill, primary cause of spill code, vessel name, vessel type code, Chris group code (chemical, petroleum, or other oils), total potential amount of spill, number of violations, violation case number, statutory penalty, penalty paid, and violation closure date.
