Interleukins as Versatile Players in Burn Pathophysiology:Research Progress on IL-1, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10

Listed in ScienceDB

Burn injury can disrupt the skin barrier, alter the wound microenvironment, and trigger systemic inflammation, immune dysfunction, and metabolic disturbances, thereby impairing host defense against infection and wound healing.

Description

Interleukins are key regulators linking local injury to systemic responses. IL-1 contributes to the initiation of inflammation; IL-6 is associated with systemic inflammation and hypermetabolism; IL-8 mediates neutrophil recruitment and activation; and IL-10 participates in anti-inflammatory feedback and immune regulation.

Their effects are interconnected and vary with time after injury, site of action, and patient condition. This review examines the roles of IL-1, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 in burn pathophysiology, summarizing relevant mechanisms, clinical observations, and advances in targeted interventions. It also discusses the potential value of longitudinal interleukin monitoring combined with immune function assessment, with the aim of informing mechanistic research and clinical translation.
