The Making of a <b><i>Sodabreadbookobject </i></b>(10 Mins)

The shredded text is combined into a bread mixture and baked upon the remaining pages of the book at 180 degrees centigrade to form the <i>Sodabreadbookobject</i>.</p><p dir="ltr">The work brings together feminist interpretations of Molly Bloom, Bracha L. Ettinger's <i>M</i><i>atrix</i><i>ial Borderspace</i> theory, and reflections on Irish cultural identity, memory, migration, and inheritance. As an Irish-born artist who has lived in the United Kingdom for almost four decades, Brennan Shiel employs autoethnography to investigate the relationship between text, material transformation, and embodied knowledge.</p><p dir="ltr">The documentary demonstrates how the physical reworking of a canonical literary text can generate new forms of visual and critical engagement.

It contributes to the project's central research question: How can a feminist informed praxis of drawing lead to new interpretations of Molly Bloom and James Joyce's <i>Ulysses </i>(1922)? This film documents a process work and is itself considered research data, generated through artistic practice.
