Camera-trap records of Japanese Red Foxes, Vulpes vulpes japonica Gray, 1868 (Carnivora, Canidae), in urban green spaces of Kyoto City

Listed in GBIF

The urban ecology of Red Fox remains poorly documented in Japan, except northern island Hokkaido.

Description

We conducted a camera-trap survey in an urban green space in Kyoto, and detected the Japanese Red Fox 14 times all occurring from October to January. These findings indicate that small, isolated green spaces—previously not considered to be wildlife habitats—form part of the seasonal home range of the Japanese red fox; they also suggest the need for more extensive research into urban wildlife that takes into account the structural and historical characteristics of Japanese cities.
