This report assesses the Algerian economy, noting that the crisis in Algeria, already a decade old, is not merely a consequence of the interruption of the December 1991 elections by an army-backed coup to keep the Front Islamique du Salut (FIS: Islamic Salvation Front) from power - but is also an economic crisis.
Description
It considers the corruption, violence, private and public sector interests, and the political patronage system - describing the centrality of the oil market to these problems - and concludes with recommendations for the international community to intervene and bring an end to the violence.
