Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy as a clinical intervention for public speaking anxiety in a treatment seeking sample: an extended literature review and randomised waitlist controlled trial

The review critically examines the potential utility and challenges of integrating VRET into clinical practice to treat PSA and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Key mechanisms and models of SAD and PSA are discussed with a focus on the role of exposure-based treatment.

VRET as an exposure modality is then examined with a focus on mechanisms and key components such as presence, in the context of other exposure treatments. The current evidence for the efficacy of VRET for SA and SAD is reviewed, including in comparison to in-vivo exposure and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The utility of VRET beyond efficacy is considered, with clinical considerations in applying VRET identified.
