Includes a discrete choice experiment on essay buying. The study empirically examines Ellis and Murdoch’s Educational Integrity Enforcement Pyramid (EIEP) which provides a framework that differentiates between student types and emphasises the need for risk-responsive approaches to academic integrity.</p><p dir="ltr">We analyse the influence of Dark Triad personality traits, perceived detection risk, and disciplinary sanctions on both the likelihood of purchasing contract-cheated work and the price students are willing to pay. </p><p dir="ltr">Latent class analysis identifies three distinct groups: <i>non-cheaters</i>, <i>cheat-curious</i> students and <i>likely cheats</i>.

Non-clinical psychopathy emerges as a significant predictor of class membership.</p><p dir="ltr">The findings support the EIEP’s central proposition that students vary not only in their propensity to engage in contract cheating but also in their responsiveness to institutional interventions. We discuss the implications of these differences for the design of more nuanced and targeted academic integrity strategies.</p><p dir="ltr"><br></p>
