Introduction<p>Global health issues require a diverse and capable workforce equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills.
Description
Many institutions have launched focused, interdisciplinary training programs to address the demand for comprehensive global health education. Global health competencies provide guidance for program curricula and activities but there is great variability in how they are applied.
Understanding the impact of different curricular components and their application is critical for strengthening program offerings and ensuring a well-trained workforce. This study sought to evaluate the impact of Northwestern University's Master of Science in Global Health, with a particular focus on assessing its practicum experience and alumni outcomes.</p>Methods<p>This study utilized secondary data analysis of existing course documents from academic years 2016–2022 and primary data collected through a survey fielded with alumni.</p>Results<p>A total of 140 students completed the MSGH 580 Practicum course.

Practica locations included 25 countries across five continents, focusing on more than 15 topics. Out of 31 alumni survey respondents, most graduates (90%) agreed that they received a high-quality education in the MSGH program.</p>Discussion<p>While no universally accepted global health training competencies currently exist, our program was grounded in the most widely recognized competency frameworks and provided trainees with the knowledge, skills, and experiential learning opportunities increasingly identified as essential for the next generation of global health professionals.
Challenges remain for this new field, most notably preparation for a challenging job market. Northwestern's MSGH program provides a model for innovative ways to engage, train, and support students as they enter the field of global health.</p>
