Thermal Performance of The Tropical Marine cleaner shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis)
Listed in figshare

Overview

This dataset supports a study investigating the thermal performance of the tropical marine cleaner shrimp Lysmata amboinensis under both warming and cooling conditions.
Description
Understanding how temperature affects animal performance is important for predicting species responses to current and future climate change and for informing aquaculture and aquarium-industry practices.
While the effects of warming on temperate species are relatively well studied, the effects of thermal change on tropical species, particularly cooling, remain poorly understood.

The study aimed to characterise both upper and lower thermal performance and tolerance in L. amboinensis, test predictions of the Oxygen and Capacity Limited Thermal Tolerance (OCLTT) hypothesis, and provide information relevant to temperature conditions during transport in the aquarium industry.

Thermal performance was assessed by measuring scaphognathite beat frequency (ventilation) during controlled warming and cooling ramps of 0.3 °C h⁻¹.

Shrimp were held at 25 °C before being exposed to either increasing or decreasing temperatures, with ventilation recorded throughout the thermal ramp. These data were used to estimate CTmax, CTmin, and Topt. Metabolic responses were assessed by measuring tissue concentrations of ATP, glucose, and L-lactate at 10, 25, 29, 31, and 34 °C using spectrophotometric enzymatic assays.

Data included

Five comma-separated values (CSV) files are provided:

shrimpscathog.csv- scaphognathite beat frequency (ventilation) data collected during the warming and cooling thermal performance experiments.
These data were used to construct thermal performance curves and estimate CTmax, CTmin, and Topt.

controlalldata.csv - data collected from control shrimp maintained at 25 °C during the corresponding thermal performance experiments.

ATPdata.csv - ATP concentration data from shrimp sampled at the experimental temperatures.

Glucosedata.csv - glucose concentration data from shrimp sampled at the experimental temperatures.

lactatedata.csv - L-lactate concentration data from shrimp sampled at the experimental temperatures.

The data were processed in Microsoft Excel and analysed in RStudio (v2023.12.0).
Statistical analyses included linear mixed-effects models for ventilation data and one-way ANOVA with post hoc comparisons for metabolite data.

The study found a temperature of optimum ventilatory performance of 30.25 °C, with a CTmax of 35.25 °C and CTmin of 7.5 °C. These data provide a characterisation of both upper and lower thermal performance and tolerance in L. amboinensis.

This dataset is associated with an unpublished manuscript currently submitted.

As decapod crustaceans are not currently protected under the UK Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, this study did not require Home Office Licensing under ASPA. However, all procedures were conducted in accordance with the ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines and followed institutional animal welfare best practices, reflecting the welfare status afforded to decapod crustacean under the UK Animal Welfare (Sentience) ACT 2022.
Animals were humanely terminated immediately upon reaching critical thermal endpoint by rapid separation of the cephalothorax, using a chilled scalpel blade, severing the central nervous cord and cephalic ganglia.
