Peripheral serotonin regulates epidermal differentiation and dermal homeostasis

Listed in NCBI GEO

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter with key peripheral functions including regulation of vascular tone, immune responses and tissue repair.

Description

It has been shown that it is expressed in skin but its role in skin homeostasis remains unclear. We conducted transcriptomic analyses to elucidate the effects of serotonin deficiency on epidermal and dermal compartments using tryptophan hydroxylase 1 knockout mice.

Our results revealed that peripheral 5-HT plays a role in epidermal differentiation, barrier integrity and homeostasis of the dermal compartment.
