Unraveling the Epigenetic Landscape of Sarcopenic Obesity: Insights into DNA Methylation Mechanisms from a Pilot Study in Older Women

Listed in NCBI GEO

Epigenetic alterations, particularly DNA methylation, are recognized as robust biomarkers of ageing and have been associated with conditions such as obesity and sarcopenia.

Description

When these two conditions coexist, the result is sarcopenic obesity (SO), a functional and clinical condition characterized by excess fat mass and reduced muscle mass and function. Although cross-talk between muscle and fat tissue is thought to play a central role in SO pathophysiology, the epigenetic mechanisms involved remain poorly understood.

Thus, this study aimed to investigate whole-blood DNA methylation patterns in older women with sarcopenic obesity, obesity, sarcopenia, and normal weight, as well as to explore the associated signaling pathways.
