At 12 months, all contacts also had a chest x-ray. The study was conducted in Mozambique (Manhiça Health Research Center, Manhiça), South Africa (Stellenbosch University, Cape Town), and Uganda (Makerere University, Kampala). Amsterdam UMC/Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development coordinated the project.

PreFIT enrolled 1291 index TB patients and 3031 close and household contacts; 2538 contacts completed follow-up. Based on the primary endpoint (bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB by positive sputum culture or positive sputum Xpert MTB/Rif or Ultra result excluding Ultra trace results in the absence of a positive culture or with a positive sputum Xpert Ultra trace result in the absence of a positive culture and a history of TB treatment in the preceding 24 months), 37 contacts were diagnosed with co-prevalent TB (between enrollment and day 14) and 66 contacts were diagnosed with incident TB (between day 15 and end of follow-up).
