Salivary miRNA in ovarian cancer

Listed in NCBI GEO

This study was aimed at identifing a salivary microRNA signature able to distinguish ovarian cancer from breast cancer patients and healthy subjects.Ovarian cancer is one of the most lethal cancers among female patients and the fifth cause of cancer-related deaths in women.

Description

The significant mortality is largely caused by late diagnosis, due to confusing, unspecific symptoms and the absence of effective tools for early diagnosis.

MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression. They have been extensively studied as promising circulating biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring of various diseases. Among body fluids, saliva accurately reflects systemic pathophysiological conditions including cancer, making it a promising diagnostic resource for screening purposes.

Finding a subset of differentially expressed miRNA in saliva of ovarian cancer's patients compared both to healthy subjects and to women affected by a different gynaecological cancer could help in the early screening purpose.
