Bladder and prostate cancer burden in Asia, 1990–2023 (GBD 2023)

Listed in figshare

Description

This deposit contains the analysis code, the analysis-ready input data and all
derived output tables and figures underlying the study "Co-occurring burden and
divergent socioeconomic gradients of bladder and prostate cancer in 49 Asian
countries and territories, 1990-2023: an ecological analysis of the Global Burden
of Disease Study 2023".

What the study does. Using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 estimates for
adults aged 20 years and older, it asks whether bladder cancer and prostate cancer
are concentrated in the same countries, whether their burden follows the same
socioeconomic gradient, and whether the two are converging in burden over time.
The analyses cover bivariate spatial co-occurrence with a local cluster typology,
quadratic regression of burden on the Human Development Index with Fieller turning
points and between-within decomposition, the mortality-to-incidence ratio as an
accessibility proxy, sigma and beta convergence, and classification of the risk
factors shared by the two cancers.

Contents
- code/ - nine Python scripts: eight analysis scripts, run in file-name order
(quadratic HDI regression with Fieller turning points and between-within
decomposition; rolling-origin out-of-sample validation of five forecasting
models at 1- and 5-year horizons with projection to 2053; univariate and
bivariate Moran's I under three spatial weight matrices with local bivariate
LISA typology; mortality-to-incidence ratio and sigma/beta convergence; shared
risk-factor classification; shared-exposure index; figure scripts), plus a
helper that downloads the Natural Earth boundary layers if boundaries/ is
empty.

Every script resolves its paths relative to the deposit root and can be
run from any location.
- analysis_ready_inputs/ - the input data read by the scripts: age-standardized
rates and counts for bladder and prostate cancer, adults aged 20 years and older,
1990-2023, aggregated to the 49-country and territory panel from the GBD 2023
results-tool downloads; the Human Development Index series; risk-factor rate
ratios; country boundary layers.
- boundaries/ - Natural Earth country boundaries (GeoJSON).
- outputs/tables/ - the 23 derived tables (T1-T8) and the full analysis logs.
- outputs/figures/ - the derived figures, in PNG and, where generated by
matplotlib, in PDF.

Reproducibility.

Running the analysis scripts in file-name order regenerates every
file in outputs/tables/ and outputs/figures/ with identical content each time.
Permutation-based inference uses a fixed random seed (20260917), so the reported
standard deviates and p-values of the Moran statistics are exactly reproducible.
A README documents the software environment and the known caveats.

Sources and attribution. GBD 2023 estimates were made available by the Institute
for Health Metrics and Evaluation (ghdx.healthdata.org/gbd-2023); Human
Development Index data by the United Nations Development Programme
(hdr.undp.org); boundary data by Natural Earth (public domain).

Users of
this deposit should cite the GBD 2023 study and comply with the IHME terms of use.

No population attributable fractions are reported in the accompanying article.
The risk-factor rate ratios in this deposit are coefficients from country-level
ecological regressions, expressed per one percentage point of summary exposure
value; they are not relative risks in the individual-level sense.

License: CC BY 4.0.
